Michael Jordan:

Michael Jordan is considered as the greatest player of all time by many people. Jordan helped to make basketball what it is today. With six national championships credited to his leadership, Michael Jordan is a name that will never be forgotten in the world of basketball. After a brief bout of retirement in 1998, he joined the Washington wizards as a part owner and president of basketball operations. He later became a part of the team from 2001 to 2003 after which he hung up his jersey for good. He fueled the success of Nike’s Air Jordan sneakers, which were introduced in 1985 and remain popular today. He is known as the world’s greatest clutch player in basketball for his numerous shots and high-flying moves to win games. He eliminated the Cleveland Cavaliers twice from the NBA playoffs due to last-second shots, and won his last NBA championship with a steal and a shot.He is endeavored with numerous records and awards under his name and career, including most points in a single playoff game (63), most scoring titles (10), highest scoring average (31 points per game), and most three pointers in one-quarter of a playoff game (5).

Magic Johnson:

Originally born as Earvin Johnson, he is popularly known as Magic Johnson. He dominated the court as America’s best player for 12 years. Magic Johnson has won the MVP title three times in his career. Johnson abruptly ended his career in 1991, but returned to play in 1992. Johnson was honored as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history in 1996. Johnson’s career achievements include three NBA MVP Awards, nine NBA Finals appearances, twelve All-Star games and ten All-NBA first and second team nominations. Johnson was a member of the Dream Team, the US basketball team that won the Olympic gold medal in 1992. After leaving the NBA in 1992, Johnson formed the Magic Johnson All-Stars, a barnstorming team that travelled around the world playing exhibition games.

A five time NBA most valuable player and a twelve time All-star, Russell was the centerpiece of the Celtics dynasty, winning eleven NBA championships during his thirteen year career. Along with Henri Richard of the National Hockey league’s Montreal Canadiens, Russell holds the record for the most championships won by an athlete in North American sports league. Russell is widely considered one of the best players in the NBA history. He has also won a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics as captain of the US national basketball team. Russell’s shot-blocking and man to man defenses were major reasons for the Celtics success.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar:

He is the leading scorer in the history of NBA and has been a record six-time NBA most valuable player. Best known for his signature jump, skyhook, Abdul-Jabbar propelled the Los Angeles Lakers to dominance. Originally born as Ferdinand Lewis for Milwaukee till 1974, after which he joined the Los Angeles Lakers. At the time of his retirement in 1989, Abdul Jabbar held the record for most games played by a single player in the NBA.Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament wrote a song about him based on the urban myth that he lost all of his money investing in hotels for tall people. The song, entitled “Sweet Lew,” appears on the album “Lost Dogs.” Abdul Jabbar has also been an actor, a basketball coach and a best-selling author.

Larry Bird:

Born on December 7, 1956 Larry Bird is an American former professional basketball player and coach and the current team president of the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association. Bird joined the Celtics in the fall of 1979 and played with them his entire career. He led the Celtics to five NBA Finals appearances, winning championships in 1981, 1984 and 1986. Bird won three straight league MVPs (1984-86), two NBA Finals MVPs (1984, 86), NBA Rookie of the Year (1980), and was selected as a first team NBA all-star nine times. Back injuries forced him to retire in 1992, and his number 33 was promptly retired by the Celtics. In addition to being part of the 50-40-90 club, he is the only person in the NBA history to be named most valuable player, Coach of the year and Executive of the year. In 2012, he was selected by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to be US global cultural ambassador.

Wilt Chamberlain:

Popularly known as the only player who has scored 100 points in a single NBA game, Wilt Chamberlain has an unbeaten record. With an average of 20 rebounds and 30 points per game in a season, he is considered as one of the greatest and most dominant players in NBA history. Before landing on a spot with the Philadelphia Warriors, Chamberlain played for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958. He was a part of the Philadelphia when he won three of his titles before being traded to the Lakers in 1968. By the end of his career he had played 1,045 games with an average of 30.1 points per game without a foul registered against his game. After his basketball career ended, Chamberlain played volleyball in the short-lived International Volleyball Association and was the president of this organization.Chamberlain was a successful businessman, authored several books and appeared in the movie Conan the Destroyer.

An NBA athlete and a leading player in terms of career points, Kobe Bryant is a professional player for the Los Angeles Lakers. He is a 15 time All-Star and 12-time member of the All-Defensive team. Bryant scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors making him the second highest scorer in a single game after wilt Chamberlain. At the age of 34, Bryant became the youngest player in the league history to reach thirty thousand career points. He also has won Gold Medals in 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics while playing for USA national basketball team. He entered the NBA directly from high school and has played for the Lakers his entire career, winning five NBA championships. As a rookie, Bryant earned himself a reputation as a high-flyer and a fan favorite by winning the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest.

Hakeem Olajuwon:

Born on January 21, 1963, he was raised as a Muslim. Olajuwon became more devoted to the faith during his period and changed the spelling of his name from Akeem to Hakeem. Hakeem is a retired Nigerian-American professional basketball player. He played for the Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors at the center position in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He emigrated from Nigeria to play basketball at the University of Houston. Before arriving to US, Hakeem also played for Nigerian junior team in All-Africa Games. In 1996, he was selected for the USA national basketball team that won a Gold Medal in Athens Olympics. In the fall of 2003, Hakeem decided to retire from basketball due to a back injury.  He ended his career as the league’s all-time leader in blocks with 3, 830.

Nicknamed as “The Big Daddy” and “Shaq” he was considered to be one of the most dominant players in the NBA. His NBA career started in 1992 when he was selected for Orlando Magic. He also has won three consecutive championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2011, O’Neal took retirement after his games for Boston Celtics. In 2004, he has been a part of NBA teams like Orlando Magic, Los Angeles, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics.

Tim Duncan is considered to be the best forward to ever play in the NBA. He is a 14 time All-Star and the only player to earth both the All-NBA and All-defensive honor in each of his first 12 season. He still plays for San Antonio Spurs despite of many ups and downs with the team. He was selected for the US national basketball team for 2004 Athens Olympics and won a Bronze Medal. Duncan was also a member of the USA team that recorded ten consecutive wins for qualifying in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
