40 Creative and Bizarre Surreal Paintings by Cyril Rolando
Dec 1, 2009 Featured, Inspiration
Cyril Rolando is a 24 year old artist from Paris, France. A clinician psychologist by trade, he also draws for fun, focusing primarily on the human emotions. Despite never attending art school, Cyril’s work shines through as creative and surreal. His inspiration comes from his experiences as a psychologist, and from Time Burton and Hayao Miyazaki. About his artwork, he writes “This is a return to childhood, where animals can speak, dreams become reality and imagination rules the world.”
In this post, we’ll look at 40 creative, interesting, weird and bizarre paintings from Cyril. His work resembles a surreal form of painting, though his work pushes the boundaries of every style.
On deviantART, he is known as AquaSixio, so if you like his work, check out his full gallery: http://aquasixio.deviantart.com/
Without any further a due, prepare to be amazed.

Gee, I don’t mean to be a jerk, but the Isabelle picture (http://www.presidiacreative.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Isabelle-500×626.jpg) looks an awful lot, and by that I mean exactly down to even the same size of –> http://img1.jurko.net/wall/paper/claire_danes_3.jpg
…but maybe that’s just me.

There’s a definite resemblance, the artist might have used it as a reference. But it might be coincidence.

In the image, the Cartographer, I notice the Square and Compasses, arranged for the 2nd degree, the Fellowcraft. After a quick surveillance of the image I noticed that there are few, if almost no, other connections to Freemasonry. Why include the square and compasses?

I’m kind of surprised that nobody else has brought this up yet. There is a lack of consistency in how these pictures are signed. A number are signed with either AS6 or A56 (difficult to tell given the boxy typeface) in a rectangle, a number with no signature at all, and a lone picture (the giraffe) is signed as copyright Sixio. This leads me to believe that these works come from no fewer than three separate artists as every artist understands the need to sign their work, Sixio and AS6 cannot have been the artist behind the unsigned works. Additionally, there’s the issue with the images that are based directly upon pictures of Carly Pope and Claire Danes. What I suspect happened is that Cyril Rolando’s work is on a site like Deviant Art and whomever made this post copied his work over and additionally copied over a number of images from his favorites list (favorite works from other people) and mistakenly labeled them as Rolando’s work.

Wait…I just caught the line about Rolando being known as AquaSixio on DeviantArt. This explains it all. The unsigned works could have been before he learned the importance of signing your work, the Sixio piece to come from an early period of signing work, and the AS6 signature what he finally settled upon using.
